Barbarian (2022) #509

“Barbarian” feels like the perfect movie to watch on Devil’s night as a double feature with “The Crow”. Both take place in Detroit and both are dark and violent. Both take place in a bad part of town, and both have their own hidden monsters, aka very bad people. What starts off as an awkward exploration of how uncomfortable a woman could be by taking one risky chance after another becomes something completely different with its twisty 2nd act. Staring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgard, Richard Brake ("31" and "Mandy") and Jusitn Long ("Tusk").

Tess arrives in Detroit for a job interview, but things are not off to a great start. First her ex won't stop calling her, and then she discovers that her Airbnb has been double booked. Having nowhere else to go, Tess is coaxed to come in by the other guest, Keith. Initially hesitant, Tess gives Keith the benefit of doubt and decides to trust him. Sensing her unease, Keith does his best to defuse the situation and offers to sleep on the couch. Tensions ease more when Tess learns that Keith is involved in one of the groups her new job is planning on working with. When she awakes, Keith has already left for the day, so she leaves for her interview, now noticing the run-down condition of the neighborhood. The interview goes well and seems to be getting better, but when she arrives at the house, Tess is chased by a homeless man yelling wildly at her.

Shaken, Tess finds the basement door open. She goes to see what's in the basement but get locked in. Tess discovers a hidden corridor that contains a mattress, video camera, and bloody handprints. She is eventually freed when Keith arrives back at the house, and once Tess tells him what she's found, he takes the intuitive to search the corridor further. Fearing that something may have happened to Keith after a long absence, Tess goes back down the corridor, which becomes a series of tunnels in the dark. She finds Kieth, who is injured and terrified, and soon finds out who had harmed him.

From the dark to the bright sunshine filled backdrop of California, the film switches gears and focuses on AJ, a man who is having a rough day as well. First, he's accused of sexual assault on a co-star on tv series, then he finds out that he's been fired from said series. Having no immediate income but plenty of bills, and some new legal fees to deal with, AJ flies out to Detroit to sell some rental properties that he owns. Meeting up with a friend, he admits that he assaulted the girl but thought it wasn't a big deal; the complete opposite of Keith. AJ then goes to the house, which he owns, and discovers the basement. He becomes excited, thinking that he's discovered valuable extra square footage, when he becomes lost in the tunnels and is attacked by the Mother, the creature that killed Keith. AJ is tossed into a cell where he meets Tess. She's been down there for a few days and tells AJ that she thinks that they are her children.

Aat different times, both Tess and AJ manage to escape the cell. Tess makes it outside where she meets the homeless man who tells her that Mother will come out at night to look for her. Tess then is able to call the police, who when they arrive, dismiss her and threaten to take her in as the instigator. Meanwhile, AJ finds a room where Mother will not approach. Inside is an old man in a bed and various pieces of evidence that explains what is going on. Trying to help the man, AJ accidently provides the man the means to kill himself, escaping his crimes against humanity.

Through a series of events, Tess and AJ are chased around the neighborhood by Mother, with a climax ending on top of a water tower. AJ proves once again that he's not the hero, sacrificing Tess to save himself. Mother knows better, killing AJ and cuddling with an injured Tess, before Tess uses a gun to end Mother's torment.

X (2022) #506

"X" is the first released film in a new trilogy by writer/director Ti West and starring Mia Goth in all three films. Chronologically, "X" is the middle film in the narrative and takes places in 1978, preceded by "Pearl" which takes place in 1918, and then the series wraps up with "Maxxine" in 1985. "X" and "Pearl" were filmed back-to-back during the height of Covid, allowing Ti West to make the most of the location that was used in both films.

Maxine is girl who knows what she wants and quotes "I will not accept a life I do not deserve". She also declares "you're a fucking sex symbol" to her reflection in the mirror, right before leaving for a X-rated film shoot out at a remote farm. Coming along is her boyfriend Wayne, fellow exotic dancer Bobby-Lynne and her primary scene partner Jackson, and director RJ and his shy girlfriend Lorraine. After a misunderstanding with the property owner Howard, the crew quickly gets to work. With her scene coming up later in the day, Maxine walks around the property and runs into Pearl, Howard's wife. Invited into the house, Pearl becomes almost obsessive over Maxine, showing her an old picture from her youth where the two look nearly identical. Maxine is able to get out of the house right before Howard returns.

Pearl secretly watches Maxine film her sex scene in the barn, which entices her to seduce Howard. He says he can't, and this triggers Pearl's unhealthy murderous tendencies. Her first victim is RJ, who she finds after he decides to leave the project after Lorraine requests to be in the film with the others. Then one by one the group is separated. Waye is killed by Pearl in the barn, while Howard locks Lorraine in the basement and then takes Jackson out to the river under the pretense that they are looking for his confused wife. Pearl sneaks into bed while Maxine is sleeping and molests her. Pearl quickly leaves when Maxine wakes up screaming. Bobby-Lynne tries to help Pearl, who is standing on a dock naked, but Pearl pusher her into the river where a large alligator quickly kills the young woman.

Lorraine escapes the basement only to be killed by Howard using a shotgun. Howard dies as he and Pearl tries to move the body. Maxine narrowly misses being shot Pearl, how is thrown back by the kickback of the gun. Pearl is finally killed when Maxine drives the van over her head. It's only at the end that we learn that Maxine is the daughter of a popular tv preacher, who constantly shown on the tv throughout the film.

"X" is comprised of some great talent such as Brittany Snow (Would You Rather) as Bobby-Lynne, Martin Henderson (The Ring) as Wayne, Jenna Ortega as Lorraine, and of course Mia Goth as Maxine. This film is Ti West's return to horror, having been nine years since he had made "The Sacrament".

Fun detail - Plowing Service is painted on the side of the van the group drives to the farm in, a humorous innuendo that add levity to a dark film.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) #502

In the vein similar to that of “Halloween”, the new “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” follows the events after the first film while bypassing the existence of the other entries in the series. Knowing that, this film still doesn't make complete sense if you're trying to connect it narratively to the first film. So instead, go into this movie as if it is the first in a series, just one that reminds you of a movie of the same name. Doing this, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is a taunt slasher that presents some memorable kills. Unlike the original, which hinted at the extreme violence but isn't shown, this one has it all on screen.

The film opens with a group of young entrepreneurs, Melody and her sister Lila, and Dante and his girlfriend Ruth, who have plans to auction off properties in the ghost town of Harlow, creating a vibrant and gentrified scene for other people their age. Things go astray when they find that one of the houses is still occupied by an old woman her silent, hulking "son". She is rushed to the hospital with her son, driven by the two officers who had come to evict her; Ruth, goes along after feeling guilty about the old woman. The others stay and welcome a bus load of investors, while Lila gets to know the local mechanic Richter. During their conversation, we learn that Lila is a traumatized survivor of a school shooting.

Things take a sudden turn for the worse when the old woman dies on the way to the hospital. Her son reacts violently, attacking the police officers, causing the ambulance to crash. Ruth is momentarily knocked out but awakes in time to see the man cutting off the old woman's face, only to overlay it over his own. Leatherface is back and angry! He quickly kills the driver and Ruth before heading home, where he finds a town full of fresh victims!

When Richter finds out that the old woman might actually still own her home, he takes the keys from Dante and Melody, telling them that he'll return them once they prove they own her house. The two are forced to search the house but run into Leatherface, who attacks Dante. He's distracted by Richter, whose death allows Melody time to escape. She runs to the bus, where the investors are staying dry during a storm. Leatherface enters the bus for one of the most memorable horror moments of 2022. With chainsaw in hand, Leatherface does what he does best, pure bloody chaos. Lila and Melody escape only to run into Sally, the sole survivor of the first film. She has revenge on the mind, but she isn't a Laurie Strode and gets killed before she gets to take Leatherface down for good. It's up to a gun wielding Lila, coming to terms with her fear of firearms, to go toe to toe with Leatherface. He's old, he's getting tired, right?

Favorite moment of the film is the final death. If you know, you know.

Smile (2022) #499

"Smile", a dark and haunting psychological thriller that offers some new ideas for the horror genre. The film examines the mental breakdown of Rose, a therapist who works in a hospital's psychiatric ward. Some blame her mental decline on working too much while others believe that she's suffering from the same mental disorders that plagued her mother, who had finally succumbed to suicide. The truth is that she's been cursed, or marked, by an evil force that is taunting her until it finally possesses its victim, causing them to kill themselves violently in front of a witness.

It was a normal day in the psychiatric ward for Rose until Laura was brought in. She was having a manic episode, reportedly suffering from insurmountable stress ever she witnessed her professor kill himself in front of her nearly a week before. She begs for Rose to just listen to her, that she is seeing people that others can't, and that she needs help. Rose begins to respond her as if she is delusional, and Laura realizes that Rose does not believe her. She pleads and pleads but suddenly stop. Laura's behavior abruptly alters, she quiet and smiling directly at Rose, and before Rose can react, Laura takes a shard of clay from a broken flowerpot and fatally cuts herself. Afterwards, she is interviewed by police detectives, one of which is a former boyfriend of hers named Joel.

The next day, Rose finds one of her patients with the same creepy smile that Laura had on her face. He begins to scream at Rose that she's going to die soon, but when she calls for help, he's found to be sleeping. Rose is given some time off to recuperate but soon Rose starts to see vague images in the darkness and strangers in the distance looking at her. Random people as well as those she knows begin to smile at her, and as her hallucinations continue, those in her life become concerned and afraid of her. Looking more closely at the details surrounding Laura and suicide she witnessed, and with some help from Joel, Laura learns that there is a pattern of suicides with a single witness going back for a few months.

The pattern seems hopeless and that her time is running out but a glimmer of hope arises when she learns that one person survived the curse by killing someone with a witness present; the witness then continued with the curse. After contemplating this option, Rose realizes that she can just face the evil alone, and if she died alone, the curse might be broken. Returning to her childhood home, Rose has a final confrontation with the evil entity, as well as her own personal demons.

"Smile" is the natural evolution of horror movies like "Ringu" and "It Follows", where the lead character becomes cursed and the only way to survive is to pass it along on to a new victim. In "Ringu", the video must be shown to someone within seven days, and "It Follows" is about finding a new sexual partner. "Smile" is about violent death and the unfortunate soul who watches it. "Smile 2" has just been released with great reviews, so I can't wait to see how this mythos continues.

Hellraiser (2022) #488

After all of the fanfare, the buildup, excitement, and naysayers full of doubt, the long-awaited revival of "Hellraiser" has arrived! Now that it has had some time to be seen by the masses and picked apart by those who didn't care for it for one reason or another, I'm here to share my thoughts about the eleventh film of this beloved franchise. I enjoyed the movie and recognize that it is not a direct sequel to any of the films but rather a clever reimagining of the powers of the puzzle box and its wicked guardians.

While the original narrative is about a degenerate rake seeking supreme pleasure obtained by solving a mysterious puzzle box, this outing offers additional "prizes" to choose from if you can solve the puzzle. Replacing Frank, we have Voight, an ultra-rich entrepreneur who is collecting victims to solve the puzzle box in order to achieve the final configuration. The film begins with his latest victim, Joey, being ripped apart by the chains and hooks after he solves the puzzle while attending a lavish party.

The story then refocuses on Riley, a struggling former drug addict who is trying to balance life between her new bad influence boyfriend Trevor and her estranged brother Matt and his circle of friends. Trevor convinces Riley to help him with a heist but all they find is the strange and unassuming puzzle box within a safe. When Riley returns home, she has an argument with Matt who accuses her of using again. She leaves to a park and solves the puzzle, barely missing getting cut by a blade that springs forth from the box. Matt comes looking for her, is cut by the box, and accidently becomes the next victim and is taken as a sacrifice by the Cenobites. Matt's boyfriend Colin and his roommate Nora help Riley and Trevor search for Matt and try to solve the mystery around the puzzle box.

Riely and her friends are eventually led to Voight's abandoned mansion, itself a puzzle box of sorts that very reminiscent of the house from "Thir13en Ghosts". As they come closer to finding out the truth about the box, the Cenobites make their presence further known and try to regain the puzzle box by whatever means necessary. They demand sacrifices, even at the expense of sacrificing one of their own, and if enough tributes are offered, who will receive the "gift" and what will they choose?

I appreciate the risks they took narratively and I feel it stays true to both the original "Hellraiser" film and the novella "The Hellbound Heart". Yes, the story is about the demonic Cenobites but it's more focused on desire from those tempted by the puzzle box. The make-up for the Cenobites is creative and clean, and that might be the only real low point of the film; for so many open wounds, they tend to be extremely dry.
